Today is World Teachers' Day!

Today, October 5th, is World Teachers' Day. The international commemoration started in 1994. In the website http://www.unesco.org, UNESCO said that the event "is held annually on Oct. 5 to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels. It also commemorates the anniversary of the 1966 signature of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers."

Teachers worldwide have great impact on the lives of the people especially the youth who are carving a niche for the future - the world's future. And it is also a fact that teachers act as parents of our kids outside our homes. It is logical that they should be accorded with full support, proper training, etc in order that they will become more effective and efficient in their jobs as mentors or educators.

The situation of the teachers who serve the remotest areas in the Philippines, for instance, brings to mind. Many of them would walk long distance in a rugged terrain to meet their pupils on the daily basis - risking their lives just to fulfill their duties as educators in many far-flung areas.

I would never forget how my teachers positively impacted on my life. I won't never forget those names that directly or indirectly molded my character as a person. I owe them a lot.

Long live our dear teachers!
